Artificial intelligence or ‘AI’ is rapidly changing the world as we know it, especially in the translation services industry.
In our line of work, interpreters are frequently asked whether they feel threatened by AI. This is a fascinating discussion to be having.
In our opinion, there are 2 main reasons why AI might need a few more years before replacing human interpreters:
– “Situational awareness”: understanding the context, the cultural relevance, what’s at stake, what’s implied by non-verbal communication; ensuring that the tone is right, that the message gets across, no matter the nuances and the variety of accents spoken…are you positive AI can do this at this stage?
– Confidentiality: trained to handle sensitive information, human interpreters uphold rigorous ethical standards, are you absolutely confident that your data is as secure when using a foreign AI?
